
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born on September 15, 1977 in Enugu, Nigeria.
Chimamanda is the fifth of six children and read a lot while growing up. She began studying medicine in 1997, but later left for the United States to study communication and political science. She later received a master's degree in creative writing from John Hopkins University and a master's degree in African History at Yale University.
She wrote plays and short stories, and began her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, while she was a student. It won her the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for the Best First Book. She also won the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction.
Adichie's second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, was based on the experiences of her parents during the Nigeria-Biafra war. This novel became an international bestseller and won many prizes like her previous novel.
Adichie continued writing and released several nonfiction books. One book, "We Should All Be Feminists," was adapted from a TEDx talk she gave.. Parts of the speech were featured in singer Beyoncé's song, "Flawless."
Adichie is married and has a daughter. She splits her time between the United States and Nigeria.
