Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx on June 25, 1954. She is the first Hispanic person and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

Sotomayor’s parents are Juan Sotomayor and Celina Baez. They were from Puerto Rico, and moved to New York City. In NYC, they raised their daughter in a housing project in the Bronx. When she was nine, Sotomayor’s father passed away. Both she and her mom took up hard jobs to support themselves.

At age 10, Sotomayor committed herself to becoming an attorney after being inspired by a legal drama.

Years later, she graduated as valedictorian from Cardinal Spellman High School. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and went on to study at Yale Law School.

Sotomayor held many important positions. After graduating in 1979, she worked as assistant district attorney in New York.In 1992, she was appointed by George H.W. Bush as a federal judge in the US District Court, Southern District of New York. She was later appointed by Bill Clinton to be a judge for the US Court of Appeals.

In 2009, she was appointed to her current position as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Sotomayor is known for her directness and careful thinking.
