SZA was born as Solána Imani Rowe on November 18, 1990. She was born in St. Louis Missouri and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. She was raised as an Orthodox Muslim, but was bullied growing up because of her religion. She comments, "Kids were very sure about how they felt about me and how they felt about Islam. As kids, it was a very separate thing to them like, 'You don't believe in God, you believe in Allah!'" She was forced to stop wearing her hijab. However, SZA remains vocal about her faith to this day.

In high school, SZA was very involved in sports and gymnastics. As a sophomore she ranked as one of the best gymnasts in the United States.

After high school, she studied liberal arts, but eventually dropped out and took up odd jobs. In 2011, her musical career began when she met members of the record label Top Dawg Entertainment. In the next few years, SZA released lots of music and in 2013, she was signed by the record label she encountered just a couple years ago.

Over the next few years, she worked hard and collaborated with many artists like Rihanna and Beyoncé. In summer of 2017, she released her debut album and later that year received five Grammy nominations including one for Best New Artist. SZA also won other rewards such as the Soul Train Best New Artist Award in 2017 and the  NAACP Outstanding Female Artist Award in 2018.

SZA continues to make music and has been compared to legendary artists like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill.
