Naoko Takeuchi was born in Kofu, Yamanashi, Japan on March 15, 1967. Growing up, she was interested in being an artist, but her father encouraged her to try different career paths. She attended and graduated form Kyoritsu University. She earned a degree in chemistry and alter became a pharmacist.

Later in life, her career path changed and she became a manga artist.

Starting at age 19, she worked steadily on different stories. In 2001, she released Sailor Moon which became extremely successful. Many of the characters in Sailor Moon are based on her upbringing. For example, she named some characters in the series after her relatives.
